Match Report
Dons v Bishops. Star date: 20.5.2019 Well it was already relegated Dons versus probably relegated Bishops last night. We met Welsh Dave,The Riddler,Mark and Frank Zappa in the Dons bar as they were also playing that night. The Dons had two strong boards on one and two and less so on three and four. Simon got us off to an excellent start by taking a piece off tough Bulgarian Yosef Antonov. The next time I looked he had taken two pieces and had an excellent attack brewing. My game was a bit turgid. Which of my games hasn't been turgid? Greg had a very slight edge, but with seven pawns apiece and all the heavy artillery gone leaving two pairs of bishops,it looked for all the world like a draw. It was. In the replay it was also a draw...the game was like one of those draws from the Italian football league a couple of decades ago (where defensive play had squashed any free flowing football..or chess). In the bar later,Greg and I discussed our games and our seasons.I think, like Ed King, that our last four or five games have all been hard draws. I remember one of the first ones about ten years ago when I was two pawns up with just bishop apiece on the board and couldn't win (different coloured bishops, good placement,a cool head and a bit more time -that was Greg in a nutshell) Gerry looked to have the better game against Gentleman Steve Crane and Phil Sneesby definitely did....a piece up and cruising, plus his opponent was horribly short of time. In the end we got the win 3-1. Yosef tried his best against Simon, but ran out of tricks and resigned a move before an unstoppable rook mate on the back rank. Phil's opponent ran out of time, but he already looked doomed. Gerry was a rooks pawn up,but couldn't see a way forward and offered the draw which Steve took straight away (the game is featured below) So,that was it. The Templars play Alysham on Thursday and need a point for their safety and our relegation. I can't see The Riddler,Ed or Crumpton dropping much from this game so it looks as though our fate is sealed. Many thanks to Gerry for his captaincy. He put in a lot of hard work, was fair and considerate, and also did his best with a smile, whilst encouraging the comradeship of the team. I am sure all the members who played under him will feel the same way.Travelling to all those distant parts of Norfolk always seemed shorter when Gerry was in the car.
