Kings Lynn v Bishops
We made the long trip to King's Lynn in the famed Gerrymobile;we,meaning Gerry, myself,Phil and Simon. The conversation centered mostly on stag nights in Amsterdam,my recollections of Hamburg,Phil's aversion to dogs, and Gerry's trip to Spain and a bit of chess in Yarmouth. We needed a big win to help us in the relegation dog eat dog affair. Heavily out graded and ungunned (can you imagine, they had Rupert Guinness on board three!!!!) we got down to business. Groans behind me gave the message that Gerry was in big trouble on board four with his centre counter affair.A quick look confirmed the worst;he was two pieces down, but fighting hard to avoid being crushed. It was all in vain, for that is exactly what happened. My game against Rod Hughes was a defensive toughie. I read before the game that he had only been beaten twice all season and had some high graded scalps to his bag. We had drawn our previous encounter and he offered the draw again.Fritz told me he was up 0.06 and I thought for a few minutes before accepting. It was quite dour and defensive, all in all,and certainly not a classic. Anyway, the other two games were far more exciting and I had visions of us winning by the half point as Simon was up the exchange on board one and Phil had bishop, knight and four pawns against rook and pawn playing Rupert. It all went horribly wrong. Simon got done in by his opponents strong play in the centre, but I felt had Simon offered the draw a move or two earlier,it would have been taken with alacrity, and Phil ended up woefully short of time (Rupert had fifty minutes to Phil's two) and was forced to accept the draw.At the end he had bishop and knight v king, but no time. So..I figure we need six points from our remaining two games to have any chance. We play Templars next and then bottom of the league Dons in the final encounter. Oh Sir! Richard Downing
