Sitting second place from bottom in Div Two,we played Wymondham on Friday in the Feathers Pub (packed as always) hoping for a repeat of our win against them at home earlier in the season. They had a line up that wouldn't be amiss in Div One. In fact their board four was more than twenty points higher than our board one.
Cor Decker on one had a longish game against our Simon, but prevailed in the end, saying "Simon moved too quickly." Hhhmmm. Earlier Gerry had essayed the Dutch Defence and came a cropper with it twice in two days...this time going down in a miniature. I had child-prodigy William Buckley(154) and the day before had been reading about Tal, where he enjoyed "taking his opponent into a dark forest...a place he had never been before." Well,I took my opponent into the dark forest as well....the only thing was that I hadn't been there before either, and William raised his eyebrows a bit and then got on with the job of taking me to the cleaners. This he did for the majority of the game and went a pawn up,before letting his guard down slightly enabling me to make perhaps my only good attacking move of a whole season and sacking the bishop leaving me with nowt but a couple of pawns due for queening and a bishop. We both thought I had won,at first, but slowly we realized at the same time that I would cock the ending up and go for the wrong approach (which is what I was going to do) before he offered me the draw. Luckily I took it. The last to finish was Phil Sneesby who held out for a long time against Hamish Lyall, with an inferior position and a pawn down to boot, but the pressure told and he gifted Hamish a rook and then threw in the towel. So we were right royally hammered and left with our tail between our legs which I am reliably informed is the best place to have it. Richard Downing
