Gents
We out graded our opponents on 3 out of 4 boards but on the day we made some serious errors that cost us the match. Nevertheless we earned two valuable points and secured what could be a very valuable draw against Don Cavaliers. On bd 4 I faced Biran Shah , a very lively and gambit minded opponent and I was immediately taken out of book when he played the Wing Gambit against my Sicilian defence. I managed to get a reasonable position from the opening and couldn’t see where his counterplay was coming from. The board got really messy and at one point I feared I had opened up my king position too much and might fail to get the full point but some accurate play won more material and eventually the game. http://view.chessbase.com/cbreader/2019/3/20/Game11355937.html Meanwhile on bd 2 Sebastian was in trouble against Steve Moore having missed a tactic that won a piece. He battled on but eventually had to cede defeat. On Bd3 Mark seemed to have a decent enough position but wavered and missed a Knight fork against a pinned pawn and had to resign as his queen was about to leave the board. The Dons were leading 2-1. Things were looking bad, very bad , as Dan Frean’s opponent Dave Dempster seemed to have a great attack building. Fortunately for Dan and the Crusaders , Dave took a great deal of time trying to make the attack work and found himself extremely short of time. Dan turned down a draw offer and proceeded to gain the advantage on the board and Dave’s Flag fell so the match was drawn, much to my relief!
