Greetings all
I'm just back from London where I entered the Golders green rapid (25 mins plus 5 secs) Game one vs a youthful Arthur Coleman rated 82. I was black and played the philidor to e4. He won an early pawn but invaded my territory and had too much hanging for too little compensation and I saw him off Game two versus Norman Scott rated 80. White pieces and the London system. He pushed f6 and weakened his castled position and then sac'd a bishop on h2 trying to break out. To be honest I made heavy weather of finishing him off and in the end won when his flag fell but was ahead on board anyway Game three versus Jurren De Groot who had won the hampstead I entered a few weeks ago. Black pieces and I played the black lion. He really didnt like it and I ended up with a monster centre and his pieces all on the wing with knight pinned to queen and then lost followed by a king and rook fork with knight, queen and both rooks versus queen and single rook ending and I won, 3 from 3 halfway. He was rated 1400 FIDE which is 95ish Game four Vs Mr Talial top seed and 1500 plus FIDE so 110 or so but official ecf is 99 I think. Played the jobava variant of the London but got it horribly wrong and he utterly demolished me in very short order, made some eye watering misjudgments and paid for it. Game five versus Mike Kadja a very strong 93 and previous winner of this. Black pieces and Black Lion. He had a very nasty set up of bishops on the key diagonals, active queen and dangerous pawns on c and d files. I countered with queen and knight attacking the castled king kingside. He misjudged and allowed me to check with knight round pinned pawn revealing queen on queen attack. Won his queen for 2 minor pieces and saw it home. Game six versus Aaron Dhillon a talented youngster rated 103 and defending champ. 3 of us on 4 points and four on 3.5 in with a shout. Played the more solid London but Aaron has played me before and tied me In knots before unleashing a horror attack on my castled king which completely blew me off the board. Horrible but brilliant. Ended on 4 points in equal fourth with day rating of 99/1450, quite pleased but the two games j lost were painful losses! Dave Knave
