Greetings mortals, a report on my five games at yarmouth this weekend, I'll perhaps link to my game against Stephen Crane later cos it was a blast.
Game one Peter Housden rating 107 He beat me at this last year and in whittlesford in March, I was white and played the grob. Lol no I played the London against his leningrad Dutch. By move 5 I had pushed h5! Blew his kingside open and was 2 pawns up and he couldn't castle. One mistake saw me lose bishop for pawn and so I had 5 pawns to his 2 but rook and knight vs rook knight and bishop. I offered a draw despite having 2 passed connectors as his forces were well integrated and supporting each other. He accepted. 0.5 points Game 2 Stephen Crane rating 109 Played queens gambit declined for the first time ever, tried to get into the cambridge springs position but couldn't and went a pawn down early. However I spotted a beautiful bishop sack on a3 which he declined but it let me smash his queen side to hell and come out rook and pawn ahead. I then callously abandoned a knight just because I could and saw it home. 1.5 points Game 3 Rod Mills rating 94 Some guy called Rod! White pieces and played the London. Rod traded down very effectively and I pushed e4 instead of c4 allowing him to control the now open e file. It was looking like it would be a horrible struggle but luckily for me Rod missed a defended pawn fork on queen and rook which handed me the initiative. 2.5 points overnight Game 4 Peter weinberger rating 107 Black pieces. E4 so played the black lion but he set up slightly out of book which threw me. A good game, but he won an early pawn and I blundered a pawn later and despite trying every trick I could think of he slowly strangled me. 2.5 points still. Game 5 Benedict ward rating 73 White pieces, London, sent Garry and Harry running and got a great position but overpushed and lost Harry. I then found a trick down the h file but for some reason traded my two rooks for his queen. Fortunately with his king exposed I was able to scoop up pawns and his knight and when he took his rooks off the same file I worked a check fork and picked off a rook and closed it out for the win. 3.5 point finish, equal 4th and won the £15 grading prize. Tournament rating 118 Pleased!!
