Hi all
A 50% weekend for me in the Under 135/1700 Fide section with 2.5/5, quick summary below Round 1 Frank Gillespie rating 103 black pieces A charming old Irish gent who played e4, I played the black lion but with conservative castling rather than suicide attack, very even battle but down to queen, rook, knight and 6 pawns to my same and 5 pawns each he made a crucial error and moved his queen to attack my queensude pawns and unable to get back as I launched my assault. Won the exchange and a pawn then chased his king around until he either lost his knight or queen and knight for my queen, either way a full rook down and resigned. A win to start Round 2 William Ellinger rating 122 white pieces Young bloke, very friendly, I played the jobava London and almost blew him off the board early doors but he found the only defence available. As is often the case I hadn't castled and it left me a little prone but I was on the attack, unfortunately I miscalculated a knight sack and did not win back a piece as I had thought and worse, his king was safer than mine even if I'd opened it a bit. He forced a queen trade and then ground me down before finding a nice bishop mate with my king stuck in the pawn melee. 1/2 Round 3 Martin Chadwick rating 74 black pieces This chap played e4 and I played the same line as round 1. He missed a double attack on his e pawn and compounded it by letting me convert my ensuing 2 pawn advantage into a piece for the 2 pawns leaving me a full piece up. Managed to trade down and had an unstoppable pawn promotion when he resigned. 2/3 overnight Pleasant evening in the hotel with a couple of vodka and oranges and a good sleep as not starting till 11 today! Round 4 David Lewis rating 116 white pieces I played the more traditional London this time and this was a cracking game. I let the advantage wane early and wasted a couple tempi and the game was very even down to rook, queen, knight and 6 pawns each. I made an error pushing my knight into his territory and missed he could win a tempo and consequently either a pawn or my knight for 2 pawns, I chose the former, knights both off and a pawn down for me. Worse, he got rook and queen on to second rank. The next half hour is probably the best defensive chess I've ever played, I managed to find a defence and provoke a small error which allowed me to check him, pick up the pawn I was down with check then force queens off leaving rook and 4 pawns each. He had a pawn one square from queening but I had rook and king on it and his king was distant. However in winning it he'd scoop up my passed pawn. A draw was agreed, which I was thrilled with. Ran it through the engine and we both scored over 90% accuracy, no blunders and just a couple mistakes and 3 inaccuracies each with everything else book, good, best, excellent and for me 1 brilliant. :) :) 2.5/4 Round 5 Maadav Nagda rating 113 black pieces I paid for it against this young lad though. Not sure if I was thinking about getting home or just frazzled but I played a truly awful game to finish. He played the London and I blundered a bishop and a pawn in the first 10 moves, really horrible play. I decided he knew what he was doing and I was clearly not in the frame of mind I was for the first 4 rounds so I threw the kitchen sink at him. Had a bishop queen battery and rook bearing down on his king but he found a very clever defence and counter attack and as I was already behind it blew me off the board, I let him mate me rather than resign as he looked like he was really enjoying the combination he'd found. Ended up 2.5/5 with a tournament rating of 105 The knave
