The Templars won our second game of the season on Thursday evening, against Aylsham Spitfires. Brian was celebrating a big birthday down in London and Nigel agreed to guest.
Nigel’s game on board 2 v David Owen was first to finish, a draw being agreed. My game v Dan Hedges on board 3 was fairly level until Dan came up with a neat tactic to win a pawn in the late middlegame. This left me with 2 queenside pawns against Dan’s 3, with each player having a 3 kingside pawns. I eventually resigned, unable to stop the queenside pawns. Nathan was way ahead on time in his board 1 clash v Matt Rausch with both players having threats. However, with only a few minutes left Matt was forced to play aggressively to avoid losing on time, but his attack petered out and with a material disadvantage and less than one minute left, he offered Nathan his hand in resignation. Ed had managed to advance a passed central pawn which was causing Bruce Carman much trouble. Ed capitalised on this by bringing both knights into his attack, eventually forcing Bruce to resign.
