Guy Bronze
Pets: My partner and I have two tabby cats, Luna and Ziggy. We didn't realise that Ziggy wasn't a bloke until we took her to the vets, but the name has stuck as she’s a nutter. Sport: Do pubs count? I've been to a lot of pubs. My record so far is 47 in under 48 hours during Norwich City of Ale 2019. Outside of that I do a fair amount of hiking and cooking, the West Highland Way being my favourite trail and wild mushroom risotto my signature dish. Marital status: In a long term relationship with my childhood sweetheart, Rosie. Favourite music/band/singer: Newton Faulkner has been my favourite since my teenage years, but recently got into Sea Shanties due to a misguided evening on YouTube. Stan Rogers is the man. Favourite film: I'm picking three. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. If you want to fight about it, the Two Towers comes out on top. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013) has an honourable mention. Last book read (excluding chess): Following my Sea Shanty trend I'm struggling my way through Master and Commander by Patrick O'Brian. Want to know about different types of sails and rope? I got you covered. Favourite Holiday Destination: Wasn't really a holiday but I loved traveling around the Pacific NorthWest area of the US for my University degree. If the volcano Mount St. Helens isn't on your bucket list, whack it on there. Edinburgh also has a special place in my heart. Country you would most like to visit: Toss up between Iceland, Italy and New Zealand - the latter probably taking it as having a pint in the real Hobbiton from the Green Dragon feels like it has to be done. Now for some Chess Stuff! When did you start playing? Started going to a lunchtime chess club at secondary school when I was in year 7, after my Dad got fed up with losing to me. Then I discovered girls and only started playing again a mere 12 years later after watching the Queen's Gambit. When did you first join a club: Discounting the John Bramston lunchtime club circa 2009 , I joined St John's in 2022. Now I'm the club secretary! See kids, dreams really can come true. Most memorable Chess Moment: At school during an inter-club tournament I mated one of the higher rated players without taking a single piece after he made a horrendous blunder. There was an audible gasp from my RE teacher. Worst Chess Moment: Fumbling a good position against David Payne from a London system opening and eventually losing on time. One day I will overpower that crafty Welshman.. then also hopefully beat him at chess. Funniest Chess Moment: Whilst playing one of my first casual games with Gerry I managed to claw a victory back after going a rook down, with a sly bishop b6 checking move. Gerry let out a long sigh and commented "Well, this isn't very nice". What are your strong points and weak points? Not being afraid to trial out a dubious gambit and trialing too many dubious gambits. Physically, I’ve got very sturdy calf muscles but a very delicate neck. Do you have a copy of your best ever win? Yet to have a win worth copying down. Your aims for the future: To have a win worth copying down. Go to all the pubs in Norwich. Stay as club secretary for more than a year. Have a friendly wrestle with Dave. |
