On Friday evening, Dave M, Olly, James and myself ventured out to Sheringham to take on the Crabs in our first match of the season. (I recall that one of our last matches before the first lockdown was also against one of the North Norfolk teams).
The Bishops marginally outgraded their opponents on 3 of the boards so close games were anticipated. Dave has already sent details of his game which he won v Tony Larner. James faced Jacob Mulligan on board 4, won Jacob's queen and converted the position into a win. Olly faced a newcomer, Dave Jones, and had an interesting game culminating in a draw. I had a tight game against Edward Hackford on board 1. After pieces had been traded I had 4 pawns on my kingside facing 3 pawns and 2 against 3 on the queenside with a knight each. I pushed my ks pawns forward to try and Edward later advanced his qs pawns to create a passed pawn. I then managed to give check with my knight, taking the loose pawn with my next move. Edward then sac'd his knight to take one of my passed pawns and the match ended with the black king in the corner hoping for a stalemate v my 2 connected passed pawns on the 6th rank and my knight, & Edward resigned. We travelled back to Norwich in a happy mood. Regards Crumpton
