Templars v Crusaders match report -part one. I am sure Gerry will do a match report for this as well,so look upon it as part one. A local derby, and a very important one for both teams struggling in the bottom three. In the Gerrymobile earlier in the evening, I had gone for a 2-2 draw or the Bishops to nick it by the half point ... that is how close the two teams were matched. Let me see, we had Javiar against the Riddler, who had been in devastating form of late. I had Crumpton the ultra-solid. Looking back on our past six games I had the one win against five draws. Simon had Ed and Gerry had Brian. Well, I was quite right about the scores, although I didn't expect Javiar to smash up Nathan as he did. I came over to look at the game and Nathan was holed up in the king's side with Javiar's pieces swarming around like vultures feasting over a dead Riddler, and a pawn ready to become a queen. After the game, I tried to cheer him up by playing a series of blitz games and Nathan won the lot, so it may have worked to some extent. Gerry and Brian agreed peace terms very early on,and yes, Crumpton and I agreed another draw ... there was very little in it, although Fritz had me up by half a pawn at one point, but by the end it looked drawish ... and it was. Ed and Simon drew as well ... Simon was a pawn up, but his position looked a bit ragged, despite Ed having doubled pawns on two files. So, the Bishops got the much needed win which takes them into the rarefied climes of third from bottom level on points with The Templars and ahead on goal average. If both teams are to survive the drop then it is imperative that we both hammer King's Lynn and the Dons, whom we face in our next game. We can do it! Richard Downing Part Two Dear All Apologies for a late match report (but hopefully it is better than no match report). Claytog life is busy nowadays and I have been doing a Learning Cafe for Primary schoolkids at my grandchildren's school this morning. First the result ... And I can report a well overdue win for the Bishops ... Hooray My game against Brian was the first to finish and I must say that I succumbed to a sob story from Brian as to how he drove to the Club straight from work, etc. It started out English and went King's Indian and Fritz announced it deviated into a Smyslov system. I didn't feel under pressure at any time and was more interested in Javier's game against Nathan and so quite prattlike decided against a temporary sacrifice of my Knight by 19.......Nxe3 and I would have been 2 pawns to the better in another 3 moves. All being equal after 26 moves we shook hands on both coming first equal. Richard has already reported on his game so no more to say. Simon's game against Ed King was also a fairly equal affair but then when I was relaxing in the comfort of the Coachmakers' lounge bar it was announced that Simon was a pawn up but my elation was dashed a little while later when another draw was agreed. The most interesting and exciting game was on Board 1 with Javier for the Bishops against "The Riddler" Nathan. Javier's comments follow and his game is attached. Hopefully some of our top players will provide some analysis for our benefit (please)... "On move 10 I horribly blundered my rook, I don't know what I was thinking. But surprisingly having the queen on b2 came in quite handy later on for the attack. Being rook down for a bishop meant that if I just played passive and go to an endgame I would be done for, so I decided to launch an attack on the king side and hope for the best. I decided to throw this attack already on move 11 but I needed some preparation to support my pawns so after moves 12 and 13 and decided to start with the pawns avalanche. After 19. g6 the pawns were blocked so I was forced to sacrifice the bishop to carry on with the attack. Up until move 22 according to the engine I am doing very badly with almost -4 but this was the key move, Nathan only really had one good move and all of the others would sooner or later end up with checkmate. Fortunately for me Nathan didn't play that move (Nf8) and from there on having his king stuck in the middle without escape towards the queen side and the passed pawn decided the game."
That's all from me folks, but if you haven't replied to the Spring Bash e-mail then please do as I need to plan out for tables, refreshments, etc.
Thanks & All the Best Gerry
