Good evening all,
A brief overview of the match which was reported to me by the team, at this time this is all the information which has been submitted, The team were slightly out graded but not by much in their second match of the season, an away game against the Broadlands Harriers, below is the tale of their endeavors and indeed of their victory. Aaron Hodgson 0 – 1 Ander Movilla Chris Cook ½ – ½ Dennis Driscoll Matthew Haines ½ – ½ Rod Mills Costakis Stephanides ½ – ½ Guy Bronze Rod My game on board 3 started out OK, or so I thought, but my opponent played well and my pieces didn’t have much room for maneuver. I lost the exchange and things were looking bleak … but I started to play some better moves towards the end and won the exchange back. We both had king rook and pawns in the end game, but he had a couple more pawns than me. I won back one of those pawns and offered the draw – which (somewhat to my surprise) he accepted. I regard that as half a point salvaged from a potentially lost game. The only game still playing once mine was over was Dennis’s board 3 game, which looked like a solid draw unless someone made a mistake, and a draw was duly agreed shortly after I started watching. Guy A rather lively affair on my board. According to the analysis I played a Pirc morphing into a Lion Defence against e4. I tried to go on the offensive as early as possible by swinging my knights across to White's Kingside. Some questionable moves followed from both parties, with my opponent snatching a pawn and issuing a flurry of checks which eventually petered out. I replied by recapturing a pawn with my Rook, forcing White's Queen off the d-file. This allowed me to claim back said d-file with my own Queen and drive an intruding bishop to the edge of the board. If I'd played the right move at this point I would have had Mate in 14, alas I allowed a further intrusion of White's Queen - which ultimately resulted in a trade of the monarchs. Reviewing the PGN I still had a strong position at this stage, but struggled to see how to get my exposed King off the back rank and capitalise on my opponent's equally fossilised King. A draw was offered and I accepted. PGN here if anyone is interested: https://www.chess.com/analysis/game/pgn/2ncwGi3QKg?tab=review Ander My opponent played the Caro-Kann against my e4, which caught me a bit off guard and by the end of the opening he had a slightly better position. But he was playing quite fast and in move 15 he blundered a Knight. By move 22 it was checkmate. Quick win: I had used one hour of my time and he only 10 mins (?!) Well done to the team and thank you to Rod (Mr Reliable) for driving, Kind regards James
