The Dicky Report for 11/08/2022
Firstly, many thanks to David Payne for running the themed blitz tournament last night. He did a great job and should be treasured by the club and us as players. The theme was "The Smith Morra gambit" and sixteen players turned up for it! It was an opening I had never played before either as an attack or defence... and to be honest, I never will. So last night felt like playing a new game... "It was chess, Spock, but not as we know it.!" How did I do? Moderately well... some good wins and a few narrow defeats to the big guns, some of which should have been wins, but for time trouble. I played eleven games and only got really hammered in one game (the Clayton creature..arhhh!). Anyway, the winner of the whole affair was Anthony Hall ... whom we got to meet for the first time and a very nice chap he turned out to be. Special mentions to Mark Lim and Cristina Casti for taking second and third place respectively. The tournament for me was judged on how much laughter went on along with plenty of banter. It was played outside in the larger of the two courtyards with a lovely breeze wafting in and lots of cold beers to be quaffed. Heaven! Next week there is another blitz tournament with a bizarre opening which involves moving the king after the second move, but I forgot what it is called [the double-bong cloud attack, Ed] On another note, thanks for all who returned the internals questionaire.... it went pretty much as Nathan and I expected, with everybody favouring the Swiss style of tournament.... and all willing to be promoted and demoted by the rankings they achieve during the year. We will try for ten players each in the Gold, Silver and Bronze divisions and will be announcing the make-up during the first week of September (this is in case any new players join during this month). So each player will have nine internal games give or take. The grading for the Gold will probably be from 1700-upwards and the grading for silver to probably be from 1500-1699...and for Bronze to be from 1000 to 1499. We are still considering running a rapid FA cup style knock-out tournament and with 32 players we will have a perfect number of players to go into the hat. Uncle Dicky
