Good evening all, another year, another trip to tithe barn. I had a more successful trip than last year, bearing in mind last year I came bottom with 0 from 5! 3 St Johnners were playing, me, cap'n Dave and Joe Grant, cap'n in the champs and me and Joe in the rather sparse challengers.
I had a rough time of it on Saturday losing to Bob Grindrod, John Weston and Bodo Rissman. Frustratingly I had chances in all 3, very strong chances in the first two but blunders in the endgame cost me in the last 2 and a foolish attack against Bob lost me a piece for dubious compensation. I was starting to think it would be the same as last year. Today I played Joe in the first game, so a nice St John's challenge and a rematch of our club league game 3 weeks ago which he won. This time for once a trap worked and I managed to see out the win, Joe resigning when down to queen vs queen and rook and 2 extra pawns. The afternoon game was against young Benedict Ward. This was more straightforward as he unfortunately walked into my heffalump trap and was two pieces and the exchange down after. He then moved his queen to save her but this allowed mate in one on the back rank. The moves from my game with Joe are attached for your perusal 1 d4 Nf6 2 Bf4 e6 London System 3 Nf3 c5 a traditional defence pressurizing the centre 4 e3 Nc6 5 c3 cxd4 an early c takes d is the current preferred defence I'm told by Eric Rosen 6 exd4 Be7 7 Nbd2 0-0 8 Bd3 a6 9 a4 d6 stopping b5 with a4, his d6 was a little concerning blunting my bishop 10 Qc2 b6 battery against h7 vs a hippoish pawn structure 11 0-0 Bb7 12 h3 Rc8 - he threatens Nb4 forking bishop and queen, breaking the battery 13 Qb1 Re8 14 Ne4 Nd5 15 Bg5 e5 16 Bxe7 Nxe7 17 dxe5 Nxe5 18 Nxe5 (= declined) dxe5 19 Rd1 Ng7 the xray is a simple threat but disguises a lot of problems and the position unravels very quickly 20 Bxa6 Qe7 I'm hoping he misses the threat..... 21 Bxb7 Qxb7 he spotted it as he took the piece, a second too late 22 Nd6 Qc6 the super fork although the rook fork was coming anyway 23 Nxc8 Rxc8 24 Qd3 h6 luft created 25 Qd7 Qc4 26 Qb7 Qe6 chasing the queen to try and swap down 27 Rd7 Rc4 7th rank fun 28 Rd8+ Kh7 29 Qd7 Qf6 30 Qd3 Rf4 31 Rd6 Qg5 32 Rxb6 e4 now 3 connected passers 33 Qg3 Qe7 finally ran out of run 34 Rxg6 and his rook must fall if mine is captured, Joe resigned at this point 1-0 Dave knave
