Well, I have never seen such a large turnout for a pre-season chessing. Only a few years ago we were getting four, maybe five turning up on a regular basis at the same stage of the season. I counted twenty one players, and they were upstairs, downstairs and in the courtyard. A great night and loads of tough competition games (10) were played out.
Results: Richard Downing V Ed King Rapidplay Division Two Draw Nathan Abbott V David Payne Standardplay Division One 1-0 Brian Cunningham V Crumpton Clarke Standardplay Division Two 0-1 Olly Nelson V Alan Holmes Standardplay Division Four 0-1 Ken Ellis V David May Standardplay Division Three Draw James Woodburn V George Sewell Rapidplay Division Four 1-0 James Woodburn V Ben Payne Rapidplay Division Four 0-1 Richard Downing V Joe Grant Blitz Championship 2-0 Other news: 1. John Waite has rejoined, paid his money and will replace Bonny Downing in the leagues (Bonny has a full-time job now,so we are still an all-male club) 2. The results of all new players will be entered onto the Norfolk league webpage as soon as they have paid the ECF and have got their new grading. There were some cracking games, from the high-end encounter between Nathan and David to the cut and thrust of my encounter with Ed King. Ed was two pawns up at one point, but I fought back doggedly and with time on my side offered a draw which Ed declined, but after getting himself in a bit of a tangle, finally accepted. Ken Ellis v Dave the Knave was another good one with bishop plus pawn v rook ending, which was a draw. I will be sending out league tables etc during the weekend. Remember, it is up to you to arrange your fixtures. Richard Downing
